The 40th Session of the Enforcement Committee of WCO

The 40th Session of the Enforcement Committee (EC) took place from 24 to 28 February at the World Customs Organization (WCO) in Brussels, Belgium. The theme of the 40th Session was “Customs enforcement fostering sustainability for people, prosperity and the planet”, which was chosen by WCO for 2020 and Customs delegates, UNODC and Interpol participated in the session. Customs delegates took time to present their activities and discuss topics addressed by the WCO Enforcement programmes.

The agenda included the following sessions; Environment; Drugs; Security; Intelligence and Risk Management; CEN; Cultural Heritage; IPR, Health and Safety; Revenue; Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing

During the panel session for the role of customs enforcement operations with regard to drugs, RILO AP illustrated the expansion of illegal drug markets with the connectivity of international criminal organizations and stressed the serious impact on health and safety issues worldwide.

To counter the surge in illicit drugs production and distribution, RILO AP mentioned the need for tight crackdown on illicit drugs based on rapid information exchange and joint investigations.  Also RILO AP addressed the plan to conduct a joint operation that combats to illicit drugs and cuts off the supply chain of international criminal organizations through cooperation between customs and international organizations.
