Debriefing meeting of Operation DEMETER VI

The debriefing seminar for Operation DEMETER VI was held via video conference on 20th November 2020. The Global Operation DEMETER VI enhancing regulatory measures to illegal shipments of hazardous waste restricted by Basel Convention and substances controlled by the Montreal Protocol has become one of the representative operations for environmental preservation since the first DEMETER I started from 2009. While Operation DEMETER VI was carried out for 28 days, the WCO Secretariat, the Regional Intelligence Liaison Offices (RILOs), 73 Member states and 7 international organizations including the International Criminal Organization (INTERPOL), UN Environment Programme ( UNEP) and the European Anti-Fraud Office (OLAF) etc. participated.


The Secretary General of the World Customs Organization, Dr. Kunio Mikuriya and the Vice Minister of the General Administration of China Customs, Mr. Yuning Sun made the remarks at the beginning of a seminar. Then, Head of RILO AP, Mr. Hyungmin BEAK, made an opening remark. RILO AP, the Operational Coordination Unit (OCU), presented the results of operation DEMETER VI and feedback from participants.


Operation DEMETER VI seized almost 99,000 tons of waste and 78,000 pieces of waste materials and 42 tons of substances controlled by the Montreal Protocol, despite the restriction measures of the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic.
