Operation DEMETER VIII is a global operation on the monitoring and control of transboundary movements of hazardous wastes and their disposal controlled under the Basel Convention and on the illegal trade in ozone depleting substances and other global warming contributing gases controlled under the Montreal Protocol. In 2021, amid the continuing impact of COVID-19 pandemic, 87 Member Customs administrations participated in Operation DEMETER VII, as well as 7 RILOs and 8 organizations. This year, with the objective of enhancing information exchange and cooperative enforcement efforts amongst Customs across the globe to prevent shipment and intercept illegal cross-border shipment of hazardous waste and substances controlled under the Montreal Protocol, Operation DEMETER VIII is being progressed with active participation of 90 member administration, 9 RILOs and 8 international organizations
