Operation Mekong Dragon V & IRENE IV Briefing Meetin

The Operation Mekong Dragon V & IRENE IV Briefing Meeting was held during 11-13 April 2023 in Shanghai, hosted by China Customs. The meeting started with welcoming remarks from Mr. Zhu Kangping, Head of the Anti-smuggling Bureau of Shanghai Customs. Mr. Wang He, Deputy Director General of the Anti-smuggling Bureau, General Administration of China Customs, Mr. Vu Quang Toan, Deputy Director, Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Department, Vietnam Customs, Mr. CheonJeong Park, Head of WCO RILO AP, Ms. Jenna Dawson-Faber, Regional Coordinator for Southeast Asia, UNODC Global Programme on Crimes that Affect the Environment delivered opening remarks respectively. Officers of customs, police, and environment agencies from Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Hong Kong of China, India, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Mongolia, Nepal, New Zealand, Republic of Korea, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam joined the briefing. RILO AP, WCO Environment Programme, IFAW, TRAFFIC, WCS, and Meiya Pico offered support. Nearly 30 presentations were made and shared. With the successful outcome of the previous operations, a proposal for the implementation of Operation Mekong Dragon V and Operation IRENE IV were proposed in the RILO AP NCP meeting and WCO AP RCP meeting. Operation OMD V targets the smuggling of drugs and wildlife; heroin, cocaine, methamphetamine, ketamine, pangolins, and their scales, turtles, tortoises, rhino horns, ivory and its products, siamese rosewood, red sandalwood are the priorities of the Operation. Operation IRENE IV targets on small arms and light weapons illegally traded and transported, including items prohibited or restricted by national legislation through cargo, passengers, post, and express courier channels
